Comments: My name is Ted Kandell and I'm the (volunteer) administrator
of the Lebanon-Syria-Palestine-Jordan DNA Project at Family Tree DNA.
A
Guerios from Argentina did DNA testing. He says his ancestor was Fares
Gharios from Jbeil, Lebanon. The interesting thing about his result is that
he is quite similar to a very large number of an extremely specific
male-line genetic group Europeans (Swiss, Germans, and English, among
others), but he is different enough from them not to actually be of
European origin at all.
Is
there any connection to the Sheikhs Chamour?
It
doesn't seem that this Gharios family was "Ghassanid" as such, or
rather, if they were, they weren't from the Yamani Ghassanid clan.
It
somehow seems that the European genetic matches "originated in
Lebanon" ... or perhaps this family was Greek or Anatolian. Of course
they could very well be Haurani Syrians, since there were many ancient
settlers there from the north in Hellenistic times.
This
seems to be a mystery. Why would a Lebanese seem to be connected to the
ancestor of certain Northern Europeans?
Perhaps
you would be interested in doing a DNA test with www.familytreedna.com to see where the Gharios family
actually originated?
Many
Lebanese Maronites claim to be "Ghassanids". They certainly seem
to be Hauranis - or people from the northern coast of Syria around Antioch
- but they are not necessarily Arabs from Yemen. I suppose the term could
have originated with the idea of "Ghassanid Christians" in
general who maintained their Christian faith over the centuries and who
relocated to Batroun and Jebeil to join the Crusaders.
Guerios
isn't the only sort of Lebanese who genetically looks "almost but not
quite European" on the male line. This isn't quite the Phoenicians,
since these don't generally seem to cluster around the coasts of the
Mediterranean ... I think this has something to do with the Roman Empire
and colonists from "Syria".'
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiberius_Iulius_Abdes_Pantera
Iulius
Abdes Pantera couldn't have been the only "Syrian" Lebanese Roman
colonist in Europe.
The
really interesting thing is, as I've mentioned, some Lebanese seem
to be at the "root" of many of the major European Y chromosome
lineages. Clearly some Europeans are "Paleolithic" but these are
generally a minority.
The
very surprising thing now is that much of Western Europe - out to Ireland -
in fact is rather closely related to the Near East. Actually, it's not much
of a "surprise". The "Centum" Indo-European languages
were also found in the Near East. The Afro-Asiatic languages include both
Berber, Semitic, and also the Egyptian, Hamitic and Chadic families. There
are close cross-continental connections there.
Even
the ancient sources knew this. It isn't just Phoenicians and Sea Peoples -
or Greeks - but also something much earlier too. There's also of course the
pre-Islamic Arab Expansion out of "Arabia Felix" /
Yemen, that you've closely documented, the Ghassanids and Lakhmids.
Lebanese and Arabs know about this, but somehow this hasn't entered the
scientific discussion. (Not 100% sure why, but I have some theories about
"Phoenicianism" and the politics of present-day Lebanon.)
It
would be very very cool if (some or many of ) the Gharios family were
indeed in haplogroup G.

Comments: I began my search of our
family in 2000. I have worked toward finding as many of the Tribal families
of El Ghassanid. With the help of three others I have traced us back to
Phonecia. (I am sure this is NOT news to you.) I continue finding names. I
came across your site as I do others somewhat accidently. This is the first
I have heard of the Gharios Family. After these yrs I am still attempting
to find the other two branches of my own family, Al-Gallaloomy; those two
would be Nassar and Boulos. When El Ghassanid moved from Marib area into
Houron the Kutana branch took the name of Nassar while the Munsor branch
took the name of Boulos. I am attempting to locate and speak to somebody
that knows the history for I would love to tie it into the rest of us.
Thank you, may I add all El Ghassanid came from Marib in the Yemen during
the approximate years between 550 - 650. This is the first I have found of
your family name. God Bless and I hope to hear from you.

Hi cousin,
It's me again.
By the way, I'm doing an extensive research myself and got to the same
conclusion you have in your website. We're all princes called "de
jure" (or by law or by right even withou monarchy) descendants of the
Sheik Chemor / Ghassanids Kings. I'll found the Royal House of Gharios of
Byblos and the Sacred Order of Saint Michael ArchAngel just as a
tribute of our past rulers ancestors. I'll add my other noble families too
(I've an italian Count title (Ricciulli) and an English Barony (Walwyn)
from my father and mother. I'll issue noble patent letters to all the
Gharios interested. Once we don't have any monarchy the title is good as
"fons honour" or "source of honor".
All the best,
According to a historical book named The Sheiks Chemors written
by father Aghnatios Khoury around 1950, the family Gharios of Chiyah
is formally called “Gharios Habbaki Chemor” due to the village of Beit Habbak in the region of Byblos. This Habbaki family is issued from the
prestigious “Chemor” family of Kfarhata-Zgharta.
The Chemors of Kfarhata have the title of Sheiks. They were the inhabitants of Akoura in the mountains of Byblos between 1211 and 1633 and the rulers of
Zgharta-Zawiya between 1641 and 1747. Their ancestors were the Ghassanids, a Christian tribe that dwelled in the Arabian Peninsula. After being displaced from
Yemen
because of a natural disaster, they settled in the Houran
region of Syria. They have allied themselves to the Byzantines as protectors of the South. Past the
Islamic conquest of the region, they sought refuge in Lebanon.
Their first stay was in Akoura (Byblos
district) then they moved to Kfarhata in 1641.
At the beginning of the eighteenth century, some
troubles occurred between the Sheiks
Chemor and the Daher family. As a result a member
of the Chemors was compelled to flee the village and take refuge in a small
over sighted village in the uphill of Byblos, Beit Habbak. He went
there with his four sons and his unique daughter. The latter got married
with the son of the concierge although her family did not accept it. Her
brothers had killed her husband and were once again obliged to run away
from the village.
The first one went to the mountainous village of Baskinta and because he
was coming from Beit Habbak, he was called “Habbaki” which with time became
“Hobeika”. The second one, Ferjane Chemor, had the courage to stay
in Beit Habbak. Today, his offspring is known as the family “Ferjane”.
The last two brothers, Farhat and Gharios
went to the suburbs of Beirut where water is available and citrus trees are
abundant. Farhat Chemor is today survived by a large family in
Hadath today known as the family “Farhat”. Gharios Chemor went to
Chiyah in 1757. His son Antoun took the name of his
father as his family name like his uncles. We don’t know if Antoun had
brothers or sisters but we are sure that he had two sons: Fares (confirmed
on the 19 April 1849) and Youssef (confirmed
in 1852).
I know that the family in Jbeil may be different, but what probably
happened was some argument between the original family that caused
bannishment of even some branch of the family went in separate ways for
some reason. According with some experts, in arab culture, this kind of
family argument is a source of shame and is erased of any writting or oral
record. Probably that time they don't even talk about it. That's why the
Jbeil family research goes with information to a certain point. The family
was not that big (still isn't nowdays) to have completely independent
sources. Well, that is what I found out after a lot of research.
We also found the Zacarias Guerios family connection with Chiya. He is
descendant of Youssef Gharios (younger brother of my ascendant Fares), son
of Antoun, son of Gharios Chemor, son of Sheik Youssef Chemor.
"May God grant us the wisdom to discover right, the will to choose it,
and the strength to make it endure."

I am Georges Gharios
from the city of Chiyah in Lebanon.
The family Gharios of Chiyah is not at all related to the family Gharios of
mazraaet aboud or amchit or zahleh. But this will not stop the fact that we
have the same family name.I have some important and verified information
about the name GHARIOS:
It is the name of Saint Gurias of Edessa (Syria), martyr of the IV
century, he died in 305 AD. The martyr Gurias (or Guria) was an ascetic at Edessa, and nothing
is known of his life before his arrest during the persecutions of
Diolcletian. He and his friend, Samonas (or Shamuma), were, according to Jacob of
Serugh, old men at the time of their martyrdom. The pair are
said to have endured three days of torture, including having been hung
upside down, before Musonius, the procurator of Antioch, ordered them beheaded. The
fellow ascetics were buried together. Deacon Habib, a martyr under
Licinius, is said to have been buried in their tomb and is honored with
them. They will be the subject since the VI century of a largely nowadays
forgotten important worship. We celebrate Saint Gurias the 15th
of November.
In the last century, this first name was
widely present in Lebanon like almost all the saints names (Antoine,
Georges, Elias, Joseph….) it’s sure that one of your grand grand fathers
was named “Gharios something” but the generations after him took his first name
as family name like we found today in Lebanon the family names GEORGES,
ELIAS…
If you
want to know the history of the Gharios family of Chiyah which is very
different of those of Mazraaet abboud, I can send it for you. One of the
differences is that they are originated from the family Owais of Shahtoul
and we are originated from the family Chemor of Kfarhata-Zgharta Lebanon
which were the governors of Aqoura between the XII and XVI century. They
were probably originated from Jordan
and Yemen.

Comments Dear
Gharios, I'm happy to find your website. I've been making my own research
about the name. My grand-fahter was called Mauricio Mansur Guerios and he
was from Lebanon.
His father was Feres Guerios and his mother Barjuth Guerios. But, I found
in my research, a french probable orign for the name. The family name is
Gueriot, so if you refer as the Gueriot family, you could say "The
Gueriots" or "The Guerios"! I know that the name in Lebanon is
originally Gharios, but it can be an arabic prounonciation for the french
Gueriots. I've never been in Lebanon, but as far as I know
there is a great french colony there, so would be easy to understand the
french origin. I've also experienced with other lebanese people the same
question, "Guerios, but it isn't arabic"! And even saying that
the primitive spelling was Gharios, it didn' t help them to believe. I'm in
New York right now, but I'm going back to Brazil
soon, then I can send you the crest (blazon of arms) of the family. Let's
be in touch, even distant, we're probably cousins! All the best to all the
family, Ahnume Guerios

Comments Hi,
In reviewing the family tree, I realized that my Son's name never made it
onto the tree. His name is shown above. I submitted the info about 8 years
and was hoping that the tree would have been updated by now. The
information on the form is mine and not my Son's. Our tree branch is
through Tanios Gharios, split into Elias and Sarhan Gharios, under Sarhan,
there is Elias and under Elias there is Antoine and son Elias should be
after me. If there is any confusion about this, a my Uncle Sarhan who
resides in Ashrafeyet can assist. His number is 446647. If there are any
problems, please don't hesitate to email me at the above email address.
Just a little background, our family migrated to American in 1977 and
reside in Connecticut.
We went back to Lebanon
approximately 4 years ago for the first time and have not gone back. My
kids want to go to Lebanon
for a visit and can't wait. Hopefully some day I will be able to take them.
They are relatively young now. This web site is great. It will give me an
opportunity to learn more about our family. Will the tree ever be updated
in color? I currently have one framed but the blue color is fading away and
it is barely readable. Thanks and that is it for now.

Comments Hi, I am son of Gerson Guerios and my
grandfather is Guerios Zacarias Guerios. Iam looking for my roots in all
places in the world, if i am not wrong, I think that we have a lot of
persons from our family in Australia.
Another great thing, I was walking in downtow, here in Curitiba, and I
founded a very intrusting thing, a building called Guerios, is a very old
building, I asked to everyone about who made that but I could found. So,
Iam very happy about your research in our family. If I can help you in
anything please, mail-me. See you my friend.
